HATS OFF: Breast Cancer Foundation’s mission is to offer assistance to women diagnosed with breast cancer and experience financial hardship or are economically disadvantaged. HATS OFF links women to other breast cancer service providers. HATS OFF maintains a private nurturing environment for those coping with breast cancer and offers assistance through the breast cancer maze.
HATS OFF: Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation was formed as the results of Dale Cager’s diagnosis with breast cancer. In 1994, at the age of 36, she was diagnosed with stage III breast cancer that was not detected by mammogram screening, but was discovered six months later after it had metastasized to about ten centimeters (the size of a lemon). After the surgical radical mastectomy, Dale endured several dosages of chemotherapy and radiation. Thereafter, she became certified as a Reach to Recovery Volunteer with the American Cancer Society. Upon her calls to reach out to other women, she discovered other needs. Several needed financial assistance to sustain them during their crisis and ordeal with breast cancer. Dale provided financial support out of her pocket to over 50 women and helped them live a more quality of life at all possibilities. “She gave back!” Dale was diagnosed again in 2007 at age 50 and endured another round of chemotherapy. She then decided that HATS OFF: Breast Cancer Foundation was needed as a means and more appropriate way to assist newly diagnosed breast cancer survivors. HATS OFF was granted 501 (c) (3) status in 2008, a grass roots foundation.
